5 minute timer

Five minutes for a real break, or for taking the first step.

05:00

What 5 minutes are good for

Five minutes is the pomodoro break: after 25 minutes of focus, five of rest. But a break only works if it's actually a break. Scrolling usually drains you more than standing up, drinking some water and looking out the window.

It's also a good middle ground if two minutes feel too short and twenty-five too long. Five minutes is enough to ease into a boring task without feeling like you've signed up for something big.

On a rough day, five minutes might be all the productivity you get, and that's okay. A small start is still a start.

  • A break between two work blocks
  • Stretch your neck and back
  • Slow breathing before a meeting
  • Empty the sink
  • Write down tomorrow's top three

How to use this timer

Tap Start. The countdown keeps going even if you switch tabs or lock your computer, because it uses your device's clock rather than a counter that can drift. The tab title shows the time left, so you can see it at a glance.

Need more time? Tap +1 min without stopping. Just want a big clock? Tap Full screen. At the end you'll hear a short beep and, on phones, feel a vibration when the browser allows it.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do on a 5 minute break?

Something that gets you off the screen: stand up, drink water, stretch, walk to the window. Your phone tends to grab you more than it rests you.

Is 5 minutes enough to meditate?

Yes. Sit, close your eyes and count breaths up to ten, starting over when your mind wanders. The timer tells you when it's over, so you don't have to check the clock.

Does the timer work when my screen is locked?

With the tab in the background, yes: time is measured by your device's clock and the sound is scheduled ahead. With the phone locked, some browsers silence the page. For a guaranteed alert on a locked phone, use the Done! app.

Do I need to install anything or sign up?

No. The timer runs in your browser, free, with no sign-up and no ads. Nothing you do here is sent anywhere.

Want this timer in your pocket?
